A Novel of Prison Lifeâby a Former Inmate
The Glass House
A Novel by
JON EDGAR WEBB
The author of this penetrating novel of prison life is himself a former prison inmate. Writing from bitter personal experience, he has told the story of John Ditto, the convicted murderer, who became the official czar of the prisoners.
Through the eyes of John Ditto the reader is shown the day by day life of the prisoners. Ditto, as editor of the inmatesâ newspaper, has been given exceptional privileges, and he is free to move around as he pleases. Only one thing is denied himâactual freedom. Time and again he listens to the plans being formulated by prisoners who are considering making a break, but he will have none of it. He feels that by using his influence plus that of the chaplain, who has befriended him, eventually he will be paroled. Only one thing hinders him in his planâhis wife, on one of her visits to the prison has been permitted to be alone with him and as a result, she has had a child.
This is a grim book, it is true, but its vignettes of prison life, of solitary confinement, of the mental breakdown of the prisoners, of the brutality and venality of the prison system have been rendered with a freshness and penetration that will make The Glass House widely read and widely discussed.
